About Water Wanderings: Water Wanderings Inc. is an environmental education program for young people based in Hyde Park, VT. We develop resilience and integrity through environmental education that integrates themes of justice, equity and inclusion. Our program is for children ages 9-15 and takes place in week-long overnight sessions at the Green River Reservoir State Park. Water Wanderings’ mission is to empower young people through inclusive community building, outdoor adventure, and environmental education that nourishes resilience and integrity. Our vision is that young people will disrupt oppression by developing healthy and equitable relationships with themselves, each other, and the earth.
Job Summary: Water Wanderings camp counselors are responsible for co-leading the camp sessions with Rei Baek, Water Wanderings Lead Counselor during Summer 2021.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Provide 24-hour supervision for a group of 9 campers, ages 9-12 (Session I) and 13-15 (Session II)
Teach outdoor living skills, environmental justice, and community building activities
Daily Activities Include:
Canoeing, camping, fire-building, outdoor cooking and map and compass work
Additional activities such as swimming, games, art, singing, cooking, lessons on environmental justice and inclusive community building
Required Skills/Abilities:
Strong grasp of canoeing, fire building, and camping skills.
Passion for environmental justice
Strong communication and leadership competency
Willingness to learn from and work with youth.
Education and Experience:
Some experience leading outdoor trips
Some experience working with youth,
Interest in environmental and racial justice
WFR/WFA/Lifeguard certification a plus, but not required
Physical Requirements:
Able to walk, paddle, and swim
Able to lift up to 30 lbs
Able to sleep outside and work in adverse weather conditions
Compensation: $500 stipend per week and $300 professional development fund which can be used for Lifeguard Certification, WFA certification, or to supplement WFR Certification. Possible additional $500 bonus for training, preparation and clean-up, depending on availability of funds.
